Next Step for Electrofuels in Umeå

Umeå Energi and Liquid Wind have signed agreements that enable the construction of an electrofuel facility in Umeå. With the agreements in place, the project now moves into its next phase, focusing on financing and engaging with potential investors.

The facility is scheduled to be operational in 2028 and is expected to produce up to 100,000 tons of fossil-free e-methanol per year by combining biogenic carbon dioxide from combined heat and power plant flue gases with hydrogen. This renewable fuel can replace fossil alternatives, particularly in the shipping sector.

The project will play a central role in the growing Umeå Eco Industrial Park, which hosts several initiatives for circular and sustainable energy production. Total investments in the area are expected to reach around SEK 20 billion.

"We aim to create local value while contributing to the green transition both in Sweden and internationally", says Jan Ridfeldt, CEO of Umeå Energi.
