Two New Hydrogen Stations Mark Important Steps for Hydrogen Infrastructure in Northern Sweden

Last week, a new hydrogen station was inaugurated in Storuman, followed by another in Umeå. Together, they are the world’s northernmost hydrogen stations and contribute to the development of hydrogen infrastructure even in Arctic environments.

The stations are specially designed for Arctic conditions, where low temperatures, rapid weather changes, and long winters place high demands on both technology and operational reliability. Providing robust hydrogen infrastructure under these conditions is crucial for enabling the energy transition across the country.

Collaboration Behind the Initiative

The installations have been developed by Skellefteå Kraft and OKQ8, in close collaboration with technology and system providers, including Euromekanik. By combining energy expertise, fuel infrastructure, and technical know-how, the partners have delivered solutions specifically adapted to northern conditions.

New Opportunities for Hydrogen-Based Transport

The expansion of the stations in Storuman and Umeå creates new opportunities for fossil-free transport, particularly for heavy vehicles and long-distance traffic, where hydrogen can complement electrification. The installations also contribute to increased knowledge and experience of hydrogen infrastructure in northern environments.

With these two stations, further steps are being taken toward a more connected hydrogen network in Sweden, even under Arctic conditions.
