RISE Composites – From Idea to Finished Product

RISE’s testbed for sustainable composite manufacturing is located in Piteå – a complete environment where companies can develop and test composite solutions from initial idea to finished product. The facility provides the equipment, expertise and processes needed to develop new materials and methods that combine low weight, strength and sustainability.

The testbed acts as a toolbox for companies looking to develop new components or manufacturing processes. Here, companies can validate ideas, test materials, carry out component testing and optimise manufacturing methods. The aim is for every company to leave the facility with a finished product in hand – and the knowledge needed to take the next step.

In addition to development and testing, RISE can provide support with cost estimates, design proposals and decision-making support ahead of investments in new production.

Cost-effective Solutions for the Industry of the Future

Composites have long been used in advanced products such as aircraft and sports cars, but the testbed in Piteå is bringing the technology closer to mainstream industry. The focus is on making production more cost-effective and suitable for larger volumes – a crucial factor if composites are to become more widely used in sectors such as the automotive and construction industries.

A Centre of Expertise in Northern Sweden

The testbed is part of RISE’s wider initiative in sustainable materials and helps build expertise in composite technology in northern Sweden. A cluster of companies has developed around the RISE facility in Öjebyn, including Podcomp, Kompositservice Scandinavia and Bladesolution – all with links to composite development.

RISE also collaborates with universities and companies across Sweden to meet future needs in the automotive, energy and construction industries.

Materials for a Sustainable Future

The composites industry is changing rapidly. Bio-based and recycled fibres are replacing conventional fibre materials, while new bio-based plastics are opening up opportunities for climate-smart combinations. At the testbed, companies can evaluate the entire life cycle of materials and identify solutions that combine sustainability, cost-effectiveness and functionality.
