C-Green Selected as Industrial Partner in New Research Initiative on Fibre Recycling
C-Green has been selected as an industrial partner in Infinity Fiber, an eight-year research initiative at Karlstad University with a total budget of approximately EUR 9 million. The initiative aims to develop new solutions to improve resource efficiency in the forest industry and extend the lifespan of wood fibres.
Infinity Fiber brings together researchers and 14 companies from across the forest industry value chain. The aim is to extend the lifespan of wood fibres from today’s 2–3 uses to more than 20.
C-Green will contribute its expertise in Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) and investigate how the technology can help improve resource efficiency in fibre recycling. As part of the project, the company will supply HTC biocoal produced from biosludge at C-Green’s full-scale reference plant at Stora Enso Heinola Fluting Mill in Finland.
“Infinity Fiber gives us the opportunity to work together with Karlstad University and the other industrial partners to develop new knowledge about how residual streams from the forest industry can be used more efficiently. The insights gained from the project will contribute to the continued development of our HTC technology for the pulp and paper industry,” says Monika Schildknecht, CEO of C-Green.
The research will also explore the recovery of nitrogen from process water. This could reduce the need for added nitrogen in wastewater treatment and flue gas treatment, while also reducing NOx emissions. The solutions will be evaluated from both economic and climate perspectives.
Infinity Fiber builds on the Pro2BE research environment at Karlstad University and is funded by the Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen), together with the university and industry. The initiative has a total budget of approximately EUR 9 million over eight years.
